WHERE: Hanover Rec Center with live broadcast online + recordings here: https://GinaDances.Podia.com

TIME: 6:00-7:00

WHEN:  Wednesdays, January 15 – March 5, no class Feb12.  Please note that snow days will result in Wednesdays added on to the semester (Feb 12, March 12 or March 19).

DESCRIPTION:

It comes to my attention that certain topics always seem to be at an inaccessible skill level for some students.  This class is an effort to share an advanced topic at an accessible level.  To start, the sword that we will be using is less than 1.5 pounds (normally they are at least 1 pound heavier).  This makes a big difference in anxiety level.  For example, a lighter sword is less likely to injure you with puncture wounds or bruises.  Lighter swords also reduce denting on your head (yes, heavy swords dig into your skull).  They are also less dramatic when they fall to the floor.  Beyond the sword’s weight, this class is specifically intended for people who have NOT performed sword yet and/or who may have been intimidated by the thought of doing so.  You will be challenged to balance the sword, of course, BUT you will not have to do splits, touch your head with your foot, or yodel while doing so.  The goal in this class will be to create a fun, easy-er and visually appealing choreography with lots of staging (audiences love staging).  The goal is NOT to over-stress anyone’s patience, flexibility or ….. knees.  We will create a choreography that fits those who enroll.  Period.  If you’ve been waiting for your chance to try and master sword dance, this is it.  There will not be another sword class for at least 3 years and it will probably be a more challenging one when it rolls around next time.

LOCATION: Hanover Rec Center, 48 Lebanon Street and online live.  Zoom link will be provided

FAQs: See FAQ’s page regarding foul weather, make-up classes and other issues.

WHAT TO BRING/WEAR: See FAQ’s page.  ALSO – you’ll need knee pads (you will be introduced to floor work, but it will not necessarily be a part of the choreography.)  You’ll also need a cotton scarf or other non-slip scarf to tie around your head in order to stabilize the sword.

COST: Even if you own a sword, you do need to purchase the scimitar with this class.  $95 per month (includes scimitar), once per month for three months, beginning the day you register.  The registration deadline is Monday January 6 due to the need to order the swords.   Price goes up to $105/month after January 6.   Please note that we cannot offer refunds, discounts for missed classes (although we encourage make-ups at other locations), transfers of registration/credit to other students, or refunds due to instructor illness, weather rescheduling or power outages.
