DESCRIPTION:

I am very excited about this class.  The first thing that I want to say about it, specifically to those of you who have a picture of what Tunisian Dance is, is that this is not the Tunisian Dance that you are thinking about : ) You will not be wearing 5 yards of fabric wrapped around you.  This will not be a traditional Tunisan Folklore Dance in the way that the Raqs Salaam Dance Theater has presented this style many times over the past 20 years.  Instead, this is a Belly Dance choreography heavily featuring Tunisian dance moves.  There are good examples of this out there.  For example, Egyptian dancer Azza Sherif did a spectacular Tunisian Dance Tableau that accomplished this.  The musician’s stage dancers also do a version of this (the musician is Hedi Habbouba).  A lot of Belly Dance moves find a home and/or origin in Tunisian dance.  This choreography will bring them into high relief so that you can see  how Tunisian dance influenced the melting pot that we call Belly Dance.  It is an energetic style that focuses on dynamics and percussiveness rather than the controlled elegance of say, a more purely Egyptian Raqs Sharki style.
