DESCRIPTION: Everyone is fascinated with the "Golden Age of Belly Dance." It was a defining era for Raks Sharki and will forever remain a point (the point?) of reference. The Golden Era refers to the earlier mid 1900’s when Egyptian cinema was booming, the third largest in the world by the 1950s. Pre-dating the Reda Troupe's rise to stardom, the Golden Era shaped our first screen images of 20th century Belly Dance. Since many movies featured Egyptian dance soloists, they became very popular, in part, as a result of their film appearances. This class will be an opportunity to learn about the earlier roots of Egyptian dance and really delve into how the silver screen shaped Egyptian dance. We will work on a choreography specifically drawing from the styles of Samia Gamal, Taheya Karioka and Naima Akef, three contemporary darlings of earlier 20th century Egyptian dance. The class will at once be a historical inquiry into Egyptian dance, and an opportunity to see where your roots and your style of dance have evolved from. We have all been shaped by the Golden Era dancers, but how? This dance footage is well-preserved online and there will be lots of short videos to watch, enabling you to go right to primary sources to learn. The choreography will be better suited for my more skilled dancers, but anyone who wants to learn about Golden Era Belly Dance is welcome to join and have fun with us.
