Winter 2023 "Street Bhangra Fusion"

WHERE: Hanover Rec Center and live streamed + recorded on Zoom.
WHEN: Thursdays, 7:15
DATES: January 19 - March 16 with one snow day built in and no class Feb 23

DESCRIPTION: "Street Bhangra Fusion" is my own term, intentionally put in quotes, because "fusion" is too general, "Bhangra Funk" is too specific and we won't just be doing "Street Dance".  Popular Indian dance presentations are known for their "eclecticness".  In part, this class gives an update on Indian Bhangra, a party and competition dance style.  I swore I was done teaching Bhangra, but here we go again ....  With rich historic roots in folk dance, during the 20th century Bhangra entered the party scene as well as large scale collegiate competitions. During the latter 20th and 21st centuries we see that Indian music and dance have not gone unaffected by the rise in Pop and Lock, Break Dance, Hip Hop, and Rap music and dance.  This class will focus on both purely traditional moves as well as the modern stage and street dance moves that have entered as a result of "looking West".   This class will include some Indian popular dance that is not Bhangra too.   The choreography will be a "compilation" with at least two units covered this winter.  Bhangra and any form of street dance are highly energetic and, in their natural state, aerobic and high impact.  Expect a good workout.  It is possible to dance it this semester "low impact" for those who are curious but protective of their joints.  No props will be used, no hip scarves will be worn, and sneakers are a must.  Expect a non-traditional costume when it eventually goes to stage : ) It's a no-brainer and will be an eye-opener for anyone who has taken Bhangra, Shaabi or Mahragan with me.  The class is open to anyone who performed at least at the intermediate level in 2022.

PLEASE NOTE: All classes above beginner level require instructor permission (by email).
