DESCRIPTION: This semester will be a very unique journey into the world of Persian dance as it intersects with current events in real time. It is a study in traditional Persian dance AND a lesson in the music and dance of the current protest movement. The choreography will begin with a Classical Persian excerpt from one of the choreographies that I have taught, choreographed by Shahrzad Khorsandi. It mostly involves arm movement, and it is very accessible. The piece then moves into a second section using a modern pop song from Rana Mansour called Woman. It will be accompanied by an excerpt from a modern Persian choreography, also by Shahrzad Khorsandi. The piece is a political statement in reaction to the violence against women, and others, that has put Iran in crisis. In the words of Rana Mansour, "A strong women stands up for herself. A stronger woman stands up for others. Gaining knowledge is the first step to power, but sharing it is the first step to HUMANITY." As Shahrzad's dance colleague, Delsie Khadem-Ghaeini, said, "We can inspire change together. We can inspire change in ways that are unexpected sometimes, through art and through dance." The level of challenge in this class will be intermediate, and first-time Persian dancers are welcome to join. For class members only, there will be an opportunity to work directly with Shahrzad during a later semester in the year. Will you help us to shift the tide for women in Iran?
