Veil Poi and Floorwork, Winter 2024
WHERE: Hanover Rec Center + partially recorded on Zoom (the action and space concerns prohibit full class recording). No live stream for this class.
WHEN: Thursdays, 7:15
DATES: January 18 - March 7, no class Feb 15
DESCRIPTION: This class will be sort of crazy. I've been dreaming it up in the back of my head for years. The dance starts with creative floorwork (so bring knee pads and thick mats). We haven't done floorwork in a very long time, if ever, without swords or trays on our heads, so this may be totally new material to you. This dance form entails strength, fluidity and flexibility, including the ability and willingness to get down on the floor and dance. The piece will then morph into dance with poi veil. Poi veil (in the Belly Dance world) is a turn of the 21st century prop comprised of a ball on a string with a veil attached to it. It's firmly in the special effect belly dance fusion category. The ball with veil (poi) is then whirled around. Think double veil or double cane in terms of arm movement, but with more varied and creative movement. There will be a lot of arm and shoulder action, so upper body strength is a must. The result will be a very entertaining presentation.
PLEASE NOTE: All classes above beginner level require instructor permission (by email).
