In this class students will learn a Semsimiyya style Egyptian choreography. Semsimiyya refers to the whole genre of Canal district folk music and dance featuring the simsimiyya as the main instrument. The development of the “Semsimiyya dance style” in the Suez area is a result of the cultural melding that occurred through the building of the Suez Canal (completed in 1869). The dance also became a real source of national and regional pride through its role in the 20th century cultural resistance against the British as well as other countries in the Middle East. During the building of the Suez canal, Egyptians and Westerners were often together while working, living and partying. This resulting dance style is a very eclectic fusion of the Egyptian dance with European, Mediterranean, Greek, Russian and Caucasus mountain influences. The cultural interplay of styles created a fun, lively, energetic, social and theatrical dance that retains what we love about the Egyptian “hip” dance, while integrating the livelier energy of many other cultures as well.
This class is open to any advanced student, as well as those who were beginners in the 2017 show. This will be a very fun, accessible and non-exlusive dance class (with a November option for performance) for any dancer.
