DESCRIPTION:

This will be a very different kind of class.  If you are looking for a “non-performance” class or maybe a “cameo performance” opportunity, and but you are not attached to definitely performing (because that’s possible too), then this is a great class for you.   It will most likely not lead to a typical 3-5 minute performance piece, but rather, segments, and those segments may or may not involve class members.  This year is our 20th Anniversary Show.  In honor of it, I would like to bring back some of our most visually impressive folkloric costumes.  For sure, this will involve Algerian Kabyle and Tunisian.  It will also involve at least three from these options:  Moroccan Tray, Hagalla, Ghawazee, Nubian, Tarantella….. mostly depending on which costumes are still floating around the Upper Valley.  How will this work?  All of these are styles that we have performed over the last 20 years.  We have choreographies for each, and for many of these, multiple choreographies.  During class this class we will learn (or for some of you re-learn) the most iconic snippets of these dances.  We will spend 1-2 weeks on each.  You own costumes, your friends own them, and past dancers who you don’t know own them.  The goal is to have these snippets performed on stage – maybe by you, maybe by someone else in the class, maybe by a past dancer.  But don’t worry.  There won’t be any solos (unless you are dead set on that), instead, duets, trios, small groups.  I would really love to dig up some of the Ghawazee costumes from a half dozen years ago or so.  And the Moroccan costumes.  This will take some polling and phone calling as we go.  You’ll learn a lot, you’ll experience a lot, and this is sure to be an exciting experience.  The focus will be on learning the dance sections, but the selections will be determined by costume availability through previous performers.
