DESCRIPTION:
This piece will introduce you to a fun prop we’ve never used … and it will tell a story.  First, the prop.  We will be using “dance flags”.  For the Spring class we’ll use less expensive ones that are rectangular and for the show we may upgrade to half circle silk veils.  You’ll get two for class, one for each hand.  The prop has metal rods like Isis Wings but dance flags have a huge advantage over both Isis Wings and Fan Veils.  First, they’re not attached to your neck (so you can do much more with them)!  Second, they accommodate wrist movement more like Poi Veil, but they are more elegant than Poi Veil.  Third advantage – no LED lights, thank you very much.   Lights really weigh down a prop and impede flow.  Now, the song.  I’ve been thinking about this song for a long time.  The song we’ll be using is Hozier’s Movement (edited).  It’s a song that is about moving someone’s soul with dance, and it’s highly passionate.  The storyline will have something to do with the journey of becoming a belly dancer.  Please note – given that this is a first semester class (meaning it will be the first time that any of us delve into using this particular prop), it will skew toward easier moves.  The sky is the limit with dance flags, and you can find some pretty edgy stuff out there.    Of course, if anyone learns edgy stuff (either intentionally or by mistake) we’ll incorporate it!    I just don’t want you to see some of the crazy stuff online and think “I can’t do that.”  This should be a fairly accessible class for everyone (except 1st year intermediates.)
