While American Belly Dance occasionally borrowed the Flamenco and Chinese fan in fusion pieces of the 20th century, over the past decade it has adopted the use of fan veils – fans with veils specially attached to the end of them – as one of the furthest reaches of “fusion belly dance”. Fan veil is a fusion style of Belly Dance that uses a western prop. It has elements from veil dance, from fan dances from around the world, Chinese ribbon dancing, theatrical dance and modern dance. The fans are exhilarating to dance with and to watch. This is a very dramatic prop, but please note that it requires arm and shoulder strength beyond that required for veil or stick work. Please note that any Level 2 student is welcome to take this class (with the exception of those who were beginners in the 2018 show) but that this piece is in the “challenging” category and it will require demonstrated advanced dance skill (by June), and possibly an audition, for those who want to perform it in November.
PLEASE NOTE: All classes above beginner level require instructor permission (by email) even if you have registered in advanced classes in the past.
