DESCRIPTION:
The stars have finally aligned for me to teach Afghan dance, my absolute favorite.  Given that Iran and Afghanistan are neighbors, you might be wondering how this choreography will differ from Azizam, the Persian Pop piece.  Jigar Jigar is a popular Afghan song, but it is much slower.  I intentionally picked a slower tempo song so that we can incorporate the more refined Afghan hand and body moves that make this dance form so compelling.  This will be a less bouncy choreography (faster tempo Afghan pop produces a super bouncy dance) and will slant towards the more elegant presentation of Afghan dance.  Please note that while there is some resemblance between Persian and Afghan dance styles, they are not the same.  There are moves that are distinctly Afghan and not Persian, and vice-versa.  If you have never taken Persian dance with me, please take Persian Pop rather than this class if at all possible.  There is a vocabulary of movement for which this is the advanced version, so if you haven’t taken a foundational version, the Persian Pop class would give that to you.  This will be a choreography that is picky in terms of hand moves, unlike Azizam, which will not be as picky in this way.  Please send me a note before registering if you are interested in this choreography.  It, like all 7 pm choreographies, will be a choreography for which you will have to audition for the 2026 Show.  6 pm choreographies tend to be an “automatic ‘in'” in terms of show performance, but 7 pm choreography show performance is based on skill and ability.
